Fused magnesia alumina spinel is a synthetic refractory material that is composed of magnesium oxide (MgO) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) in specific proportions. It is produced by melting and fusing magnesia and alumina raw materials at very high temperatures, typically above 2000°C, and then cooling the resulting material to form crystalline spinel phases. The resulting material has a unique combination of properties that make it highly valuable in various high-temperature and refractory applications. Here are some key characteristics and applications of fused magnesia alumina spinel:

Characteristics:

  • High Melting Point: Fused magnesia alumina spinel has an exceptionally high melting point, making it suitable for applications where it will be exposed to extreme heat and thermal shock.

  • Chemical Stability: It exhibits excellent chemical stability and resistance to chemical corrosion, making it suitable for use in harsh chemical environments.

  • Refractory Properties: It is classified as a refractory material due to its ability to withstand high temperatures, thermal cycling, and exposure to molten metals and slag.

  • High Strength: Fused magnesia alumina spinel possesses high mechanical strength, which allows it to withstand mechanical stresses and load-bearing applications in high-temperature environments.

  • Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance: It has good thermal shock resistance, meaning it can withstand rapid changes in temperature without cracking or spalling.

Applications:

  • Refractory Materials: Fused magnesia alumina spinel is commonly used in the production of refractory bricks, monolithic refractories, and castables for lining high-temperature industrial furnaces, ladles, and other equipment. Its excellent thermal properties and resistance to slag and chemical corrosion make it a valuable material in the steel, cement, and glass industries.

  • Ceramic and Foundry Industry: It is used in the manufacture of ceramic products, such as kiln furniture, and as a component in foundry sands and coatings for the casting of metals.

  • Aluminum Production: Fused magnesia alumina spinel is used in the aluminum industry, particularly in the lining of aluminum smelting and casting equipment due to its resistance to molten aluminum and thermal shock.

  • Glass Industry: It finds applications in the glass industry for refractory linings of glass melting furnaces and as a raw material for specialty glass formulations.

  • Cement Industry: Fused magnesia alumina spinel can be used in the cement industry as a refractory lining material in rotary kilns and other high-temperature processing equipment.

  • Ceramic Filters: It is used in the production of ceramic filters for molten metal filtration in the casting industry.

  • Chemical Industry: It is employed in chemical reactors and vessels that require high-temperature resistance and chemical stability.

Fused Magnesia-Alumina Spinel is produced by smelting proportioned mixture of technical grade Aluminum Oxide or high purity Bauxite and calcined Magnesium Oxide(Natural or seawater magnesia) in electric arc furnace at the temperature around 2200°C。
