MgO Spinel Brick (Magnesia Spinel Brick) is a type of refractory brick made primarily from magnesia (MgO) and alumina-rich spinel (MgAl₂O₄). It's used in high-temperature applications like cement kilns, steel ladles, and furnaces due to its excellent thermal shock resistance, high refractoriness, and good slag resistance.

Magnesia alumina spinel bricks are a type of refractory brick made from a combination of magnesia (MgO) and alumina (Al2O3) spinel as the main raw materials. The term "spinel" refers to a specific crystal structure formed by the combination of magnesia and alumina oxides. These bricks are designed for use in high-temperature applications where resistance to basic slag and thermal shock are essential.

Key Properties:

High refractoriness: Withstands temperatures >1700°C

Excellent thermal shock resistance

Good mechanical strength

Strong resistance to basic slags (alkaline environments)

Low thermal conductivity

Better volume stability at high temperature.

Composition:

Magnesia (MgO): Provides high-temperature resistance and basic slag resistance. Alumina Spinel (Al2O3-MgO): Contributes to enhanced thermal shock resistance and chemical stability. Additives: Various additives such as binders, antioxidants, and fillers may be included to optimize properties like strength, erosion resistance, and thermal conductivity.

High Temperature Resistance:

Magnesia alumina spinel bricks can withstand temperatures ranging from 1500°C to 1800°C (2732°F to 3272°F) encountered in industrial furnaces, kilns, and reactors without significant degradation.

Basic Slag Resistance:

The combination of magnesia and alumina spinel provides excellent resistance to basic slag corrosion, making these bricks suitable for applications where exposure to alkaline materials is common.

Thermal Shock Resistance:

These bricks exhibit superior thermal shock resistance, allowing them to withstand rapid temperature changes without cracking or spalling, which is crucial in high-temperature processes with frequent heating and cooling cycles.

Chemical Inertness:

Magnesia alumina spinel bricks are chemically stable and resistant to acids, alkalis, metal oxides, and other corrosive agents present in high-temperature environments, ensuring long-term performance and durability.

Low Thermal Conductivity:

They have low thermal conductivity, helping to conserve heat within the furnace or kiln and maintain uniform temperature distribution, which is important for efficient industrial processes.

Mechanical Strength:

These bricks possess good mechanical strength to withstand mechanical stresses such as thermal expansion, contraction, and mechanical loads during furnace operation.

Applications:

Magnesia alumina spinel bricks are used in various industrial applications, including steelmaking converters, electric arc furnaces, cement kilns, glass melting furnaces, and non-ferrous metal smelting processes where high-temperature resistance, slag resistance, and thermal shock resistance are critical.

Refractory Lining Design:

They are often used as part of refractory linings in furnaces, kilns, and reactors, either as standalone bricks or as part of composite refractory systems designed to optimize thermal performance, energy efficiency, and service life.

Applications:

Cement rotary kilns (especially burning zones)

Lime kilns

Steelmaking (ladle linings, converters)

Non-ferrous metal furnaces

Glass tank regenerators
